The Portrait Play application offers an innovative way to reinterpret personal selfies by transforming them into artistic representations inspired by renowned painters. This feature was showcased at The Phillips Collection’s exhibition, Gauguin to Picasso: Masterworks from Switzerland, The Staechelin and Im Obersteg Collections, providing visitors with an engaging blend of technology and art history.
Through this application, users can see their selfies rendered in the vivid colors and dynamic brushwork characteristic of artists such as Edouard Manet, Ferdinand Hodler, Alexej von Jawlensky, and Marc Chagall. The digital portraits evoke the aesthetic qualities of works like Manet’s Head of a Woman (1870), Hodler’s Portrait of Regina (1911), Jawlensky’s Self-Portrait (1911), and Chagall’s Self-Portrait (1914).
Furthermore, Portrait Play enriches the user experience by providing contextual information about these four influential artists and their contributions. Notably, the exhibited portraits at The Phillips are on display from October 10, 2015, to January 10, 2016, marking the first presentation in the United States of selections from the Staechelin and Im Obersteg collections.
